Harold Crick (Ferrell) menjalani rutinitas hidupnya dengan membosankan. Sebagai pegawai IRS (Pajak), rutinitasnya adalah angka, bukan spontanitas. Semua itu berubah ketika ia mendengar suara Kay Eiffel (Thompson), seorang pengarang yang menarasikan setiap detail kegiatan Harold dengan sempurna.

Awalnya Harold tak tahu itu adalah suara Kay bahkan mengunjungi seorang psikiater yang mengira ia menderita skizofrenia. Psikiater itu memberikan saran agar Harold mengunjungi seorang profesor sastra, Profesor Jules Hillbert (Hoffman). Dari Jules ia tahu bahwa kehidupannya hanyalah fiksi, ia adalah rekaan seorang penulis bernama Kay. Lebih parah lagi Harold tahu bahwa ia akan ‘dimatikan’ hanya ia tak tahu kapan. Ia tak mau mati dan harus bertemu sang penulis itu.

Montreal West high school student Leon Bronstein (Jay Baruchel) believes that he is the reborn incarnation of Marxist/Bolshevik leader Leon Trotsky. A group of friends go to New Orleans Mardi Gras, on their way home, they get into a car accident and realize they have hit a man. Before anyone can call for help, an ambulance arrives.
